Employees of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System Regulatory Office (MWSS-RO) had a meaningful educational trip as they participated in the Lakbayan program of the Manila Water Company, Inc. on 17 May 2016.
With the MWSS-RO employees were Chief Regulator Joel Yu, Deputy Administrators Genaline Valera and Atty. Claudine Orocio-Isorena, as well as Head Technical Assistant and Acting Manager of Public Information Department, Atty. Kristin San Pedro.
The Lakbayan Program featured a half-day tour of the Manila Water’s facilities which started at the East Zone Concessionaire’s Lakbayan Center in Balara, Quezon City. A video presentation highlighted Manila Water’s evolution into the company that it is today and how water is made potable through a series of processes and what happens to it after it is used. Other activities included planting the seeds of learning and joining the pledge as part of the community that will save the environment.
From the Lakbayan Center, the MWSS-RO employees were accompanied by the Manila Water team, led by Officer-in-Charge for Corporate Regulatory Office Christopher Ilagan, to Olandes Sewage Treatment Plant and East La Mesa Water Treatment Plant.
The Olandes Sewage Treatment Plant was designed to clean up domestic wastewater from Marikina and Quezon City and help reduce pollution in Marikina River. It can process up to 10 million liters per day (MLD) of domestic wastewater from 40,000 residents of Cinco Hermanos, Industrial Valley, and Sitio Olandes in Marikina City, and some parts of Quezon City.
The East La Mesa Treatment Plant has the capacity to treat 150 million liters of water per day. It supplies water to far-flung areas in the Rizal province.
Manila Water provides quality water and used water services to over 6.3 million residents from the 23 cities and municipalities under its jurisdiction, which includes eastern Metro Manila and Rizal Province. Going beyond the borders of Manila’s east-zone territory, the company has expanded its services in Boracay, Cebu, Clark, Laguna, and Vietnam.
