As the whole nation observes this year’s Consumer Welfare Month, the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System Regulatory Office (MWSS-RO) kicks off its consumer awareness campaigns to help consumers become more aware of their basic rights and responsibilities and effectively uphold the welfare of the Filipino consumers.
The MWSS-RO on Tuesday 07 October 2014 conducted dialogue on consumer rights and responsibilities and information dissemination on water quality and sanitation held at Rizal High School and Caniogan Elementary School in Pasig City.
School Principals Virginia Membrebe and Myrna Visaya of Rizal High School and Caniogan Elementary School, respectively welcomed the MWSS-RO delegation and supported the consumer education in schools to amplify consumer awareness on basic consumer rights and responsibilities.
The MWSS-RO in collaboration with the Departments of Energy (DOE), Trade and Industry, Health and Education prepared a series of activities for the month of October to bolster consumer education.
Earlier, Chief Regulator Joel Yu said, among the activities lined up for the month were water and sanitation, actual water quality testing, septic tanks desludging and public dialogues on metering and billing.
The MWSS-RO Customer Service Regulation Area led by Deputy Administrator Atty. Vincent Pepito Yambao, Jr. wielded efforts in undertaking programs and activities relative to the observance of this celebration to empower the welfare of the consuming public and likewise share the same vision of informing the public to become responsible consumers.
The DOE is the forefront of the Consumer Welfare Month celebration, guided by the theme “Sapat na Impormasyon: Susi sa Wastong Paggamit ng Enerhiya.” Its celebration aims to promote dissemination of sound consumer information on subjects that affect the consumers and to encourage cooperation among the consumers, business and government sectors in strengthening consumer awareness and protection.
Presidential Proclamation No. 1098 issued on 26 September 1997 declared the month of October of every year as the Consumer Welfare Month. Republic Act 7394, otherwise known as the “Consumer Act of the Philippines” seeks to improve the management, coordination and effectiveness of the nation’s consumer programs, further strengthened the protection and promotion of consumer rights and welfare.
