Access to water and sanitation is a basic human right.
Transgender or gender non-conforming individuals are at risk of exclusion, violence, and abuse when using gender-segregated water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities. This risk may lead the said individuals to avoid using such facilities in public spaces. (United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Water and Sanitation, 2016)
